Introduction and Overall Impression

The judges visited Redbourn a day after the last heatwave. The previous day had seen temperatures of over 40 degrees.

On the day of judging it was considerably cooler. On the tour, the judges were treated to some wonderful areas and they were most impressed with all they visited.

The Churchyard was particularly good, with some wonderful trees, all kept looking very well by a band of volunteers who look after the Garden of Remembrance.

The various entrances to the town were very good and have improved over the past few years, especially the new Fire Station beds which looked particularly good with some very impressive cordylines. Red, white and blue was the obvious colour scheme this year, but it was good to see lots of sustainable planting in many areas and beds.

It was good to meet the young gardeners in the Teddy Tots Group, who had to become the Forest Tots during lockdown, but they still carried on with their growing. It was good to see so many individuals and businesses helping with the overall look of Redbourn. Of real note, was the work carried out by the MOT Centre, the Vets in the High Street, the Brownies in the Village Hall, and the Residents of New Forge Place with some incredible planters giving a good display.

We were really impressed with enthusiasm of folk like Sophie and Joyce in the care home with 67 residents all living in beautiful and caring surroundings. The 'star' of the day had to be Emilie at St Luke's School who, with boundless energy and enthusiasm, and with some great colleagues and a super group of students at this school, have created an incredible place to learn.

Add to these, three allotment sites, tennis courts, puddingstone bed, the white bed, the rose beds at the library, the dry hedge of Fish Street approach, the Nickey Line, and even a thank you tree. All of the above made the judges realise just how successful Redbourn are in all they do, they deserved Gold.

Well done Redbourn.

Areas for improvement

I am sure your active committee, your friends and all concerned will continue to find something to improve. In the judges eyes, this is probably going to be difficult, as what we saw on the day was superb.

Keep on doing what you're doing and thanks for a most enjoyable visit and some lovely food.
